I had the pleasure of working on the “Vozes Urbanas” meaning Urban Voices pattern design project, which focused on the ornate residential gates in the neighbourhoods of Higienópolis and Vila Madalena in São Paulo, Brazil. These gates were particularly interesting because they maintained their ancient architecture in certain places, making them perfect for inspiring new fashion patterns.
For this project, I drew inspiration from the works of the renowned architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who used elements of Japanese inspiration and Art Nouveau in his projects. I particularly focused on the Art Nouveau elements in his work, which gave me a starting point for developing a new pattern.
I began by taking photographic records of different gates containing ornaments related to Art Nouveau. From there, I manually painted a new pattern in watercolour, creating a unique and vibrant design that incorporated the ornate details of the gates.
The “Vozes Urbanas” pattern design project was an exciting and challenging project that allowed me to apply my creativity and expertise to a new medium. I am fulfilled of the final product I produced, which showcased the beauty of the Art Nouveau style and the unique architectural elements found in the gates of these neighbourhoods.
